Entrevistamos a Andrew Morgan director de «Long Gone By» film independiente que tuvo su premiere durante el New York Latino Film Festival 2019.

Venís de los documentales, ¿cómo surgió la idea de hacer una película con un tema tan importante como la inmigración?

Hace unos años estuve trabajando con Erica Muñoz que nos llevó a pasar tiempo con familias inmigrantes y comenzó una larga conversación entre nosotros sobre una nueva forma de contar una historia en este contexto que abrió espacio para más conversación, empatía , y amor.

Al demostrar que el inmigrante roba, ¿crees que genera empatía o da razón a quienes dicen que los inmigrantes son delincuentes?

Espero que la película, en primer lugar, sirva para humanizar la experiencia de alguien que a menudo es invisible aquí en este país. Estas son situaciones imposibles en las que hemos metido personas y la película sirve para subvertir eso sobre la noción simplificada en blanco y negro, correcto e incorrecto, legal e ilegal para que el público piense en estas ideas de una manera nueva.

¿Cómo fue la reacción de la audiencia en el NYLFF?

Increíble. Fue una experiencia tan especial para todo nuestro equipo, incluidos algunos del elenco y el equipo que no lo habían visto. El festival es un lugar extraordinario que está haciendo espacio para historias que de otro modo no se verían. Ser parte de esa hermosa pizarra de películas era humillante.

¿Qué sigue para la película? Festivales, etc.

Vamos a proyectar algunos festivales más y buscaremos los mejores socios de distribución posibles para asegurarnos de que haya un buen acceso a la película aquí y en todo el mundo.

¿Tu próximo proyecto?

Estoy haciendo un trabajo documental con la ONU en este momento que es realmente emocionante. ¡Nuestro equipo también está desarrollando una nueva película con guión, así como un documental sobre el que podré hablar más pronto!

En Argentina, el cine independiente es muy difícil debido a la crisis económica, ¿cómo es ser un cineasta independiente en los Estados Unidos? ¿Algún consejo para los nuevos cineastas?

Hacer cosas, no importa qué. Sé que algunas personas realmente creativas desperdician sus vidas esperando que alguien les diga que sí. Encuentrá una manera de contar las historias que necesitas contar. Las cosas que te conmueven, las cosas que te rompen el corazón y te hacen reír y llorar, necesitamos que cuentes esas historias ahora más que nunca. Aprendé a amar el proceso y recuerda siempre que los desafíos son siempre una parte crucial del viaje creativo.

You came from documentaries, how did the idea come about to make a movie with an issue as important as immigration?

I was doing some work a few years back with Erica Muñoz that lead us to spending time with immigrant families and it started a long conversation between us about a fresh way to tell a story set against this backdrop that opened up space for more conversation, empathy, and love.

By showing that the immigrant steals do yo believe that it generates empathy or gives reason to those who say that immigrants are criminals?

I hope the film first and foremost serves to humanize the experience of someone who is so often invisible here in this country. These are impossible situations that we have put people into and the film serves to subvert that over simplified notion of black and white, right and wrong, legal and illegal to make the audience think about these ideas in a new way.

How was the reaction of the audience on the NYLFF?

Incredible. It was such a special experience for our entire team including some of the cast and crew who had not seen it. The festival is an extraordinary place that is making space for stories that might not be seen otherwise. To be a part of that beautiful slate of films was humbling.

What’s next for the film? Festivals, etc.

We are going to screen at a few more festivals and look for the best possible distribution partners to ensure that there is good access to the film here and around the world.

Your next project?

I’m doing some documentary work with the UN right now that is really exciting. Our team is also developing a new scripted film as well as a feature documentary that I’ll be able to talk more about soon!

In Argentina, independent cinema is very difficult beacause of the economic crisis, what is it like to be an independent filmmaker in the U.S.? Any advice for new filmmakers?

Make things. No matter what. I know some really creative people wasting their lives waiting in line for someone to say yes. Find a way to tell the stories that you need to tell. The things that move you, the things that break your heart and make you laugh and cry we need you to tell those stories now more than ever before. Learn to love the process and always remember that the challenges are always a crucial part of the creative journey.
