English version

In the heart of the historic district, surrounded by street fairs and tourists, Shawarma San Telmo has spent more than ten years bringing one of the great classics of Middle Eastern street food to the city.

shawarma —marinated meat slowly cooked on a vertical rotisserie— is one of those dishes that tells a story of migrations and culinary traditions that traveled from the Arab world to cities across the globe. At this San Telmo spot, the concept is simple and effective: generous portions, bold flavors, and accessible prices. And yes, there’s also an Argentine touch; as the owner told us, the dish has gradually been “Argentinized.”

We spoke with Julián Fernández, who from this corner of the neighborhood maintains a small bridge between Buenos Aires and Middle Eastern culinary tradition. The team’s warmth and passion can be felt both in the service and on the plate.

We tried the beef shawarma—juicy and richly seasoned—alongside classics such as falafel, delicious hummus (our favorite), tabbouleh salad, and the always tempting fatay filled with cheese and meat. And, in true Buenos Aires fashion, there are also French fries to complete the meal. Everything is prepared fresh and homemade, so the short wait is well worth it.

The space itself is large, with comfortable tables—something not so common in the area—and a relaxed atmosphere with music, making it an ideal stop while exploring San Telmo.

English version

Hilton Buenos Aires: The enduring relevance of a global classic.

We visited the Hilton Buenos Aires in Puerto Madero, that stretch of the city where Buenos Aires rehearses its most international version of itself. To fully embrace the experience, we stayed in a Deluxe room: spacious, filled with natural light, and open to sweeping views of the river and the city skyline. From that vantage point, Buenos Aires feels different—quieter, almost cinematic, as if its usual vertigo were suspended just a few stories below.

We decided to record our podcast from the room (Spotify). The space, comfortable and bathed in daylight, became an improvised studio. There is something invigorating about creating while in transit—allowing the surroundings to subtly shape the tone of the conversation. An experience as organic as it was enjoyable.

The hotel stands not only on architecture and comfort, but on hospitality understood as craft. The team moves with discretion and efficiency. Its infrastructure—event spaces, art, spa, pool, bar, and restaurant—reflects the global tradition that made the brand a reference point, without losing its local pulse. Puerto Madero itself embodies that balance: a frontier between the distinctly porteño and the cosmopolitan.

In the afternoon, the spa and pool offered a welcome pause. The weather certainly helped, but so did the feeling of being gently removed from the city’s noise. Later, on the top floor, Urban Sunset unfolded: DJs, signature cocktails, tapas, and the city dipping into gold.

At the restaurant came one of the most memorable moments: the tomahawk—substantial and perfectly juicy—presented and explained by the chef, whose youthful yet assured presence brought him personally to our table. There is something almost ritualistic in the gesture of describing the cut, its origin, the precise cooking point. It is not merely a dish; it is a scene, a quiet choreography that transforms dinner into experience.

There are also vegetarian options—such as homemade pastas with a distinctive sauce one prefers to imagine remains a house secret—and a menu conceived with discernment, free of excess. Fresh fish and thoughtfully prepared accompaniments complete a proposal that privileges flavor over artifice. Desserts, delicate and refined, aim not to astonish through spectacle but to close the evening in balance (the cheesecake is not to be missed). The wine selection follows suit: well-curated labels, solid choices that converse naturally with each course.

This is not only a hotel designed for international travelers; it is equally an invitation for locals seeking a pause without leaving the city. A deliberate break, brief yet meaningful. Sometimes luxury lies in something as simple as closing the door, preparing a warm bath, watching steam sketch silence in the air, and surrendering to a moment that—though it lasts only a night—reshapes the week.

The following morning, breakfast was generous and varied. Movement, recurring coffees, freshly poured juices, early light spilling across the room. A buffet that invites more than one visit—almost an early lunch.

The Hilton does not rely on grand gestures: it understands the rhythm of the city and offers, amid its constant motion, a space where time seems to move differently. And in Buenos Aires—where everything happens quickly and yet never truly stops—that pause is not a minor detail; it is a privilege. Perhaps that is why, upon leaving, one does not feel entirely gone, but rather as though something meaningful has been left waiting.

Frente a tantas opciones, dudamos.

Negresco logra ambas cosas.

English

Negresco Bistró: Where History Sits at the Table

Some hotels are more than just hotels, they are history. We visited Negresco Bistró, the restaurant at the Palladio Hotel Buenos Aires – MGallery, and the feeling was immediate: stepping into a scene already in motion, almost cinematic. Everything is exactly where it should be. It reminded us of those classic hotels we sometimes miss amid constant reinvention and today’s endless wave of new openings.

On what is now Avenida Callao 924 once stood the estate of Nicolás Rodríguez Peña, a key figure in the 1810 Cabildo Abierto. Part of that land later became Plaza Rodríguez Peña. Realizing that the very ground where we now raise a glass was once the setting for foundational political debates transforms the experience. It’s not just about dining, it’s about inhabiting a space layered with memory, meaning, and time.

The dining room preserves original oak floors and architectural details that echo another era. Small antique pieces seem to watch in silence, including a Florentine bronze sculpture of a child asleep on a chair, adding a mysterious atmosphere — almost suspended in time. The space also opens its doors to private gatherings and celebrations of all kinds, including weddings.

The kitchen, rooted in Mediterranean flavors, offers a thoughtful culinary journey led by Chef Facundo Stéfano. Faced with so many tempting options, we hesitated. Thankfully, Franco guided us precisely toward what our palate was craving.

We began with zucchini and Swiss chard fritters — light and delicate — served with an aioli that complemented without overpowering. Next came a trilogy of empanadas — beef, seafood, and cheese — balancing tradition and technique. The 400-gram ribeye arrived perfectly cooked, juicy, accompanied by golden potatoes: a classic that needs no explanation when executed well. We also sampled a vegetarian option — flavorful, delicate lasagna crafted with the same respect given to the meat dishes.

A glass of wine in hand, champagne for a toast, and then the sweet finale. The key lime pie with mango and orange sorbet brought freshness and contrast. But the true theatrical moment was the Baked Alaska: almond sponge cake, syruped quince, Malbec-infused sabayon ice cream, and Italian meringue. Textures, temperatures, and a presentation that compels you to pause — and photograph — before taking the first bite. Unforgettable.

Warm atmosphere, unhurried rhythm. Some places offer a good meal — and that’s perfectly fine. Others offer context, history, atmosphere. Negresco delivers both.

Laban is more than just a French pâtisserie — it carries an Argentine spirit that makes it irresistible in Buenos Aires. Just a few blocks from Alto Palermo, this carefully designed space — marked by its signature green — shows that every detail was thoughtfully considered. It’s not only about eating well, but about enjoying an experience where the atmosphere plays a key role.

We spoke with Iván Ullmann and Jacquie Albajari, the minds behind the project, who bring more than a decade of experience. Iván recalls the early days and the growth that led to their new location at Charcas 3656, where they now welcome guests of all ages. They also offer delivery and are constantly surprising customers with new creations. Jacquie trained in Paris and brought back a dream that is now a tangible reality.

The undisputed stars are the macalados, an Argentine creation that combines a macaron with ice cream filling. The pistachio and raspberry versions are unforgettable, while the dulce de leche macaron is a perfect nod to local flavors. Classic favorites also shine, including croissants, cinnamon rolls, canelé — moist inside with a caramelized crust — the essential carrot cake, and perfectly textured cookies.

Another standout is the pavlova, filled with pastry cream, cherries, figs, and mint — a fresh and unusual combination. One of our favorites is the Corona, a laminated pastry with banana and caramel that feels like pure indulgence.

Buenos Aires offers endless options, but when a place brings together identity, technique, and sensitivity in every detail, it stands out. Laban is one of those spots you enjoy in the moment… and inevitably want to return to.

Bebidas y postres (nivel viral)

We visited a Chinese fast food spot that just keeps growing. Yes—something new, flavorful, and with a strong identity of its own: Shanghai Express. At the helm is Tomás Xu, the creator of this project, which has already become a success, with four locations and a loyal community that never stops recommending it. The idea was born just two years ago. His parents are Chinese, he was born in Argentina, and as he likes to say: “I’m argenchino.”

The family originally ran a classic rotisserie, but Tomás—at just 25 years old—completely transformed the family business into a modern, agile, and highly appealing concept. Of course, it wasn’t easy at all: behind every dish there are years of hard work, consistency, and decisions that often go unseen.

Today, the restaurants keep growing—and so does the dream. Tomás’s goal is to expand across the entire country, turning Shanghai Express into a constantly growing franchise where more and more people can experience Chinese food with a local identity. Because that’s Argentina too: a blend of cultures, intersecting stories, and flavors that reinvent themselves. And it’s precisely at that crossroads where Shanghai Express finds its place.

The food

Chinese cuisine is one of the richest and most popular in the world: bold flavors, contrasts, textures, tradition, and street culture. In Argentina, we were waiting for something like this—fast food that offers variety, speed, and great flavor without sacrificing quality. Because fast food isn’t synonymous with “bad food”: it’s about efficiency. And in this case, instead of a burger, you’re getting the flavors of China—from the most approachable options to dishes for those who like to go a little further. The best part? The variety and the speed.

At Shanghai Express, there are classics that never fail: baos, spring rolls, chicken with almonds, and sweet-and-sour fried chicken (one of our favorites). There are also vegetarian options, like soy-sautéed noodles, and a delicious ramen.

Portions are generous, prices are accessible, and delivery is available—perfect for a great Chinese food night, whether you’re dining in or staying home.

Of course, there are plenty of standout dishes as well, like beef with shiitake mushrooms, a flavorful combination of sliced beef, cubed potatoes, and mushrooms sautéed in soy sauce, served with rice or noodles. There’s also curry chicken, with tender pieces of chicken and potatoes in a spiced sauce, and Shanghai-style sweet-and-sour pork.

Drinks & desserts (viral level)

Matcha bubble tea, jasmine green tea, and mango ice frappé—each one better than the last. Always refreshing, always satisfying, and definitely not just for summer.
And then there’s the capybara pudding: so cute it almost hurts to eat it… but so delicious and Instagrammable that it’s clearly destined to make history.

Behind the scenes

Tomás is a great chef who knows exactly what he wants—and what he’s doing. He cooks, works, tests recipes, teaches, creates content, and has become a true reference on social media. Nothing is left to chance: there’s a strong team behind him, a tremendous amount of work, and a constant presence. Success isn’t luck—it’s dedication, consistency, and attention to detail. Tomás even cooks out on the street, and his passion, combined with his natural magnetism, is contagious: it excites people, creates connection, and makes everyone want to try the food.

We grew up watching movies where Chinese food played a starring role—those takeout boxes meant more than food; they meant desire, street life, night, and city. Today, that fantasy becomes real.

Shanghai Express is exactly that: a scene we’ve seen a thousand times in movies… but now it can be lived—at a table, at home with friends, or out on the street, when night falls.

English:

In the heart of Caballito, we discovered Chill Garden, a secret oasis with a history of its own. A house with a soul: Leandro N. Alem, one of Argentina’s key political figures, once lived here. Today, the space breathes again thanks to a project born during the pandemic—one that quickly earned its place not only in the neighborhood, but in the city’s culinary circuit.

We were welcomed by a warm and attentive team. Connie, an exceptional host, walked us through the story of how this space took shape and became one of the most sought-after spots in the area. Chill Garden is not just an “Instagrammable” place—it’s a historic home brought back to life with harmony, identity, and a strong commitment to great food.

The Culinary Experience

We tried fresh cocktails, flavorful starters, and a variety of dishes where both meats and vegetarian options truly shine.
The mushroom empanadas—juicy, aromatic, beautifully crafted—are unmissable, as is the crispy provoleta, an appetizer that alone justifies the visit.

The pace of the service invites you to enjoy without rushing. Between dishes, you can relax; the experience flows, and those pauses to savor and breathe feel intentional. The cuisine is impeccable, the quality surprising, and the prices fair for the level of the place. Yes, it’s a historic house—but it’s also a team that pays attention to every detail. And you can tell. And you appreciate it.

The Garden Salad—kale, red wine–pickled beets, walnuts, cured yolk, and yogurt macerated with garlic—is fresh, creative, and balanced. Vegetarians will be genuinely pleased: tasty, healthy, and different options.

For those craving something heartier, the 400-gram grilled ribeye with creamy sweet potato purée, roasted asparagus, and huacatay sauce is a safe and memorable choice—perfectly cooked, flavorful, and unforgettable.

Desserts deserve their own chapter. The White Chocolate Suspiro, with ganache over a brownie base and a scoop of americana ice cream, is the perfect finale: sweet, balanced, and never heavy.

Chill Garden also features homemade pastas, milanesas, and generous portions ideal for sharing—or for anyone who enjoys a hearty meal. They don’t cut corners on ingredients, and it shows in every dish.

The cocktail menu also stands out: variety, signature creations, and well-executed classics, ideal for a garden afternoon or a long evening inside the casona.

The Space

You can sit indoors or outdoors—every corner has its charm. The library, the wine cellar with more than 2,500 carefully selected bottles, and the garden with over 100 plants make the experience feel different depending on where you’re seated.

Chill Garden is also an excellent venue for events. The house and its various spaces—private or open—adapt to birthdays, weddings, or corporate gatherings, always with the same warmth, history, and impeccable taste.

An important plus: it’s pet-friendly. Pets are welcome and very much part of the experience.

The Burger Garage vino a ocupar ese lugar.

Y funcionan bien.

IG: @theburgergarage.mdp

English

The Burger Garage is a neighborhood burger joint that literally started in a garage. Yes, just like those classic American stories that begin with almost nothing… except this one takes place in Mar del Plata. The idea was simple: great burgers, fair prices, and a place created for the locals. Success came fast. Today, they already have three locations, including the one we visited on Avenida Luro 4448.

Every venture starts the same way: with a single step. Doing, trying, taking a chance. Passion alone isn’t enough; you need consistency, a team, and support. Sometimes you start with very little. Lucas, the creator of the project, understood that from day one, and his enthusiasm —along with his team’s— is contagious for anyone thinking about launching something of their own.

“We reached places no one else did. The neighborhood needed us.” —Lucas

Mar del Plata is not only its downtown, the pedestrian street, or Güemes. The city is full of neighborhoods with their own identity, but it lacked spaces that combined variety, quality, and fair prices. The Burger Garage stepped in to fill that gap.

The star of the menu is, of course, the burger: big, flavorful, and juicy, with combinations that just work. They also offer chicken nuggets, seasoned fries with different sauces, and a kids’ box with original toys —the kind that genuinely surprise you. Yes, what’s trendy right now, but not always easy to find, appears here with their own twist.

Our favorite: the veggie burger —yes, genuinely delicious vegetarian options— and the meat burgers as well, all made with their own homemade secrets. The version with bacon, double patty, and cheddar is outstanding. A must.

The other locations include additional options, as Lucas hints in the video —they’re always ready to surprise you.

And after eating something like this —rich, satisfying, made with real care— there’s a simple but perfect pleasure: going for a run in Mar del Plata, right by the ocean, with that unmistakable coastal wind. Eating well and moving your body: two pleasures that balance any day.

Because entrepreneurship is also about that: finding balance. Building something from scratch, nurturing it, watching it grow. The Burger Garage proves that when there’s an idea, consistency, and a sense of community, things work. And they work well.

Difícil no repetir. (Nuestro favorito)

We visited Asian Ghetto Cantina, an exclusive Asian cuisine spot in Mar del Plata. We found a warm, welcoming place where every dish becomes an experience. We spoke with Eugenia Krause, who shared the spirit behind this project that has quickly become a local favorite. The concept was born during the pandemic thanks to Victoria Ortemberg —partner, sommelier, and the mind behind the idea— whose sharp vision gave life to this unique space.

One of the biggest surprises is their own garden, where they grow a large part of the ingredients used in the dishes. Everything is fresh, clean, and carefully handled. Behind this work are Soledad Laguarde and Luz Delorenzini, farmers who put dedication and love into every harvest—you can truly taste it in each bite. Asian cuisine—rich, diverse, and millenary—finds here a deeply personal interpretation: technique, flavor, local produce, and sensitivity in perfect balance.

The team is all about details. And Eugenia not only makes sure everything runs smoothly; she explains each dish with a warmth that turns the meal into a story.

Among the highlights, the sweet potato noodles: sautéed in sesame oil and soy sauce with shiitake mushrooms, garden vegetables, chili, and scallions. A flavorful, original vegetarian option—surprising even for those who don’t usually choose veggie dishes.

The Korean fried chicken might be the best in Mar del Plata: organic chicken from @pollosorganicosdecampo, coated in egg batter, potato starch, and a touch of wheat flour. Fried to perfection and covered in a sweet–spicy chili and tomato glaze, with scallions, sesame, and gohan on the side. A one-way trip. Hard not to order it again. (Our favorite.)

The beef bao with spicy sauce and daily pickles is an ideal starter: light, delicious, and perfectly executed. Good bao is not easy to find… they have it.

The dumplings, handmade one by one, steamed and then finished on the pan, crisp in all the right places. You’ll find the classic gyoza (pork + shrimp + scallions) and a veggie version (black beans + sweet potato + caramelized onion). Brushed with soy sauce and topped with fresh sprouts.

The ceviche is one of the most requested dishes: fresh, sharp, impeccable. And the ramen is always a ceremony—deep, aromatic, comforting. Perfect to enjoy at the bar. It’s the kind of place where you can go with someone or alone; it becomes your moment, just like in many corners of Asia.

The menu is rounded out with wines from small producers—each with a signature touch—along with beers and everything you need for a perfect night. Book ahead: it fills up. (Luckily, they also offer take away.)

And yes, this place is, without a doubt, one of our absolute favorites in Mar del Plata.

We were in Mar del Plata and this time we wanted to escape the usual recommendations. We were looking for another tradition, another flavor. And we found it: Lebanese cuisine. We arrived at Mahal, located inside the Lebanese Social Center of Mar del Plata (Moreno 3651).

Habi —the owner, originally from Venezuela— welcomed us with uncommon warmth and shared part of his story (see video): Venezuela has a strong Arab tradition, and that’s where much of his culinary knowledge comes from. Now he brings it to Argentina, and in Mar del Plata that blend feels like a permanent celebration. His team follows that energy: attentive, friendly, and genuinely proud of what they do. The space is wide, comfortable, and has that atmosphere that makes you want to stay a bit longer.

We tried everything: the mixed shawarma made with thin Arabic bread and meats marinated in homemade yogurt sauce; the falafel, a solid and well-executed vegetarian option; the chickpea croquettes, perfectly spiced and served with greens and labne; and the Lebanese rice, full of flavor with meat, onion, parsley, sunflower seeds, and fried cauliflower.
Dessert was a whole other chapter: the Persian ice cream with turmeric, rose petals, pistachios, and dates — an absolute discovery, highly recommended. They also offer a delicious apple strudel with ice cream, plus a good selection of wines, cocktails, beers, and other sweets.

We went on a Saturday and the place was full of life: a festive atmosphere, happy tables, people coming and going, and that warm buzz of a night that simply works. The show is fun and beautifully executed: a talented performer and dancer (IG: @ludmilafrias) who truly knows what she’s doing, accompanied by a piano-and-vocal ensemble that keeps the rhythm and intensity of the evening. It lasts about 45 minutes and adds a lot to the experience.
At one point, even the audience got up to dance — that mix of music, food, and celebration gave the night a special pulse. Make a reservation, because it fills up fast.

Lebanese cuisine has that unique charm: intense flavors, freshness, textures that tell a story, and a way of cooking that feels almost ceremonial. Going out to eat like this —with well-made dishes, good energy, and a community that gathers around a table— is always worth it. And at Mahal, all of that happens.

An Afternoon at Kawaii Club Café: Japanese Sweets and Flavors in Buenos Aires

by Valeria Massimino

We visited Kawaii Club Café at Av. Medrano 1232, and it felt like stepping into a cartoon. The spacious and original space combines Japanese pastries with savory options, giving you a taste of traditional Japanese cuisine, from onigiris to sandwiches inspired by Japanese flavors. There are vegetarian options and even a shop where you can pick up kawaii souvenirs like mugs, stickers, or socks, ittle details you have to discover for yourself. The café also offers fun workshops, like making and decorating cookies, perfect for enjoying with friends or family.

We spoke with Tobías, son of Ana María Serei, who has been running the café since 2020. After the pandemic, the place has grown non-stop. He shared the passion and love they put into every detail, and it truly shows. The young and warm team welcomed us with smiles and good vibes, creating an energy you feel immediately.

Among the treats we tried, the Kawaii Tower stood out, a festival of visual sweetness and flavor. The tuna and veggie onigiris were fresh and flavorful, offering a satisfying savory option, and the anime-inspired cookies and cakes were perfect for photos and to sweeten the afternoon. We also enjoyed the Dai Sando – Chicken Teriyaki, a sandwich with artisanal white bread, teriyaki chicken, leafy greens, tomato, cabbage, and herb mayonnaise, ideal for a relaxed brunch. Refreshing lemonades and creamy chocolate drinks completed the experience with a true sugar shock.

The tower includes many Japanese delights, like strawberry-filled fish pastries, and outside of it, you’ll find even more options, including burgers and fries, all with a kawaii twist, catering to every taste. As Tobías explains, the essence of the café is to connect with Japanese street food, offering delicious, quick dishes that you can enjoy on the streets of Japan or in a themed café here in Buenos Aires.

The café can be reserved for birthdays and events, making Kawaii a perfect place to share special moments.

Open Wednesday to Sunday from 3 PM to 8 PM, Kawaii Club Café is much more than a café: it’s a corner where Japanese culture comes alive through all the senses, in an Instagram-worthy and fun environment.
