De raíces argentinas, Clara Aranovich presentó «Tantalum» en el Festival de Cine de Tribeca 2018 y no pasó desapercibida. Multifacética y creativa. En el marco del festival hablamos con ella sobre su prometedora carrera.

De acuerdo con tu biografía sos mitad argentina, mitad chilena, contanos sobre tu relación con nuestro país…

Argentina es la tierra de mi sangre. Mi relación con ella se centra en mi relación con mi padre, ya que él nació y creció en Buenos Aires y desde entonces ha regresado a Buenos Aires en su retiro. Lo visito con la mayor frecuencia posible y me siento muy a gusto allí.

Cuando vemos tu cuerpo de trabajo, se puede observar un estilo (en tus anuncios, videoclips y cortometrajes) una forma muy personal de encuadrar y filmar…

Me atraen la oscuridad, lo surreal, el humor seco y la nostalgia. Incluso cuando realizo un trabajo de documental, intento mantener la producción cinematográfica lo más compuesta y cinematográfica posible.

Parece que finalmente Hollywood está prestando atención a las mujeres directoras ¿qué piensas? 

Bueno, Hollywood finalmente se vio obligado a hablar sobre las directoras. Esto es, obviamente, un paso en la dirección correcta. Pero hasta ahora, solo el 3,3% de las películas más taquilleras de este año fueron dirigidas por mujeres (lo que es menos del 9% en 2016, creo), por lo que la tendencia no es positiva. Pero no estoy sorprendida, una cosa es hablar sobre un tema, y otra cosa muy diferente es hacer algo al respecto. Los tomadores de decisiones están aterrados de las mujeres y los cineastas de color, simple y llanamente. Tomará más tiempo antes de que podamos llegar a alcanzar una participación del 50% del trabajo. Pero, día a día, ¿qué más puedo hacer aparte de mantener mi cabeza baja y seguir presionando hacia adelante?

¿Cómo nació la idea de esta serie?

Tantalum se inspiró en la etimología detrás del elemento de la tabla periódica del mismo nombre. Viene de la misma raíz que la palabra «atormentar»: el mito del rey Tántalo (quien fue desterrado a una eternidad de sed y hambre rodeado de frutas y agua que no podía consumir). El mito me inspiró a preguntarme: «¿Qué aspecto tendría alguien que parece tener todo pero siente que no se parece a nada en un contexto contemporáneo?» La serie también está inspirada en Cordyceps, un hongo endoparasitario que ataca a las hormigas y otros artrópodos. Tantalum es efectivamente un una historia de «paciente cero» sobre cordyceps que infectan a humanos por primera vez.

¿Cómo fue la respuesta de Tantalum en Tribeca? 

Tribeca solo estrenó el piloto, por lo que hasta cierto punto todavía está en secreto ¡Avisaremos tan pronto como se pueda ver públicamente.

¿Cuál es su opinión sobre el streaming? ¿Pueden las salas de cine estar en riesgo? 

Tengo dos maneras de pensar cuando se trata de streaming. Por un lado, como cinefila, me encanta tener acceso a tantos títulos increíbles en línea. ¡Es como magia! FilmStruck, en particular, es uno de mis proveedores favoritos: puedo ver gran parte de la Colección Criterion simplemente desplazándome y haciendo clic. Pero también estoy obsesionada a la experiencia de mirar películas en los cines. El cine debe proyectarse y disfrutarse en comunidad. Es devastador imaginar un mundo en el que la gente ya no vea películas en los cines … pero mi sospecha es que, mientras que la industria cinematográfica continúe contrayéndose, nunca se irán por completo. Pero la carga recae en nosotros, los consumidores, para mantenerlos vivos, que es una directiva que tomo muy en serio (risas)

Contanos sobre tus próximos proyectos…

Actualmente estoy armando una película con el mismo estudio que produjo y financió Tantalum, Adaptive Studios. También estoy en medio de la producción de un episodio de The Migrant Kitchen, un show de KCET / PBS sobre cocineros inmigrantes que cambian el panorama culinario en Estados Unidos. Aparte de eso, siempre estoy lanzando, escribiendo, ideando, etc.

¿Un director/a de cine? Kieslowski, Tarkovsky, Ceylan, P. T. Anderson, Campion, Kubrick, Wilder, Hsiao-Hsien, Cuarón, Spike Jonze, Guadagnino, Fellini, Bergman, Sorrentino, Passer, Arnold, Larraín, Fassbinder, Yi, Assayas, Wenders, por nombrar algunos.

¿Un libro? Hace poco amé «Wolf in White Van» (2014, John Darnielle) y lo releí y volví a amar «Entre el mundo y yo» (2015, Ta-Nehisi Coates).

¿Una serie? Soy una chica Mad Men.

¿Un disco? El primer álbum del que me enamoré fue el de Jimmy Cliff «The harder they come» (1972) cuando tenía como 5 años. ¡Todavía se sostiene!

With Argentine roots, Clara Aranovich presented «Tantalum» at the Tribeca Film Festival 2018 and did not go unnoticed. We talked with her about her promising career.

According to your bio, you are half Chilean half Argentine, tell us about your relationship with Argentina…

Argentina is the land of my blood. My relationship to it is centered around my relationship with my father, as he was born and raised in Buenos Aires and has since returned to BA in his retirement. I visit as frequently as possible, and I feel very at home there.

When we see your body of work you can notice a style (in your ads, video clips, and short films) a very personal way of framing and shooting, tell us about your style

I’m drawn to darkness, surreality, dry humor, and nostalgia. Even when doing documentary work I try to keep the filmmaking a composed and cinematic as possible.

It seems like finally, Hollywood is paying attention to the women directors ¿what do you think?

Well, Hollywood has finally be forced to talk about female directors. This is, obviously, a step in the right direction. But so far only 3.3% of top grossing films this year were directed by women (which is down from 9% in 2016, I believe), so the trend is not positive. But I’m not surprised. It’s one thing to talk about an issue, it’s another very different thing to actually do something about it. Decision-makers are terrified of women and filmmakers of color, plain and simple. It will take more time before we can even fathom approaching a 50% share of the work out there. But, day-to-day, what more can I do other than keep my head down and keep pressing onward?

How the idea for this series born?

TANTALUM was inspired by the etymology behind the eponymous periodic table element. It comes from the same root as the word “tantalize” – the myth of King Tantalus (who was banished to an eternity of thirst and hunger while surrounded by fruit and water he couldn’t consume). The myth inspired me to ask myself, “What would someone who looks like he has everything but feels like he has nothing look like in a contemporary context?” The series is also inspired by cordyceps, a endoparasitic fungus that targets ants and other arthropods. TANTALUM is effectively a patient zero story about cordyceps infecting humans for the first time.

How was the feedback of Tantalum in Tribeca? After Festival, where people can see Tantalum?

Tribeca only premiered the pilot, so to an extent it’s still under wraps. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s publicly viewable!

What is your opinion on streaming? Can movie theatres be at risk?

I’m of two minds when it comes to streaming. On the one hand, as a cinephile and movie junkie, I love having access to so many incredible titles online. It’s like magic! FilmStruck in particular is one of my favorite purveyors — I can watch much of the Criterion Collection just by scrolling/clicking. But I’m also obsessed with/attached to the experience of watching films in theaters. Cinema was meant to be projected and ingested with a community. It’s devastating to imagine a world in which people no longer see films in theaters… but my suspicion is, while the movie theater industry may continue to contract, they’ll never go completely away. But the burden is on us, the consumers, to keep them alive, which is a directive I take very seriously

Tell us about your next projects

I’m currently assembling a feature with the same studio who produced/financed TANTALUM, Adaptive Studios. I’m also in the middle of production on an episode of THE MIGRANT KITCHEN, a KCET/PBS show about immigrant chefs changing the culinary landscape in America. Aside from that I’m always pitching, writing, ideating, etc..
