 ¿Cuándo y cómo nace HIPA?

HIPA fue establecida en 2011 por Su Alteza Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, el Príncipe Heredero de Dubai.

¿Cómo se seleccionan los jurados?

Cada año, la Junta de Fideicomisarios de la HIPA elabora una lista breve de jurados, que luego selecciona la lista final de jueces para la temporada.

¿Su Alteza Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum participa en la selección de las fotos ganadoras?

No, el patron de HIPA no tiene nada que ver con la selección de las fotografías ganadoras, que es responsabilidad total del jurado.

¿El concurso privilegia la técnica sobre las fotografías más espontáneas?

HIPA no tiene una clara preferencia por el tipo de fotografías seleccionadas, siempre y cuando estén dentro de los parámetros y reglas de la competencia. Al final, son los jueces quienes califican las presentaciones según su criterio y su comprensión de los temas y las reglas de HIPA.

¿Alguna anécdota de concursos anteriores?

En nuestra séptima temporada recientemente completada, tuvimos la suerte de tener un ganador del gran premio que no solo capturó una imagen impresionante, sino que también resultó ser el ganador más joven de HIPA. Esto no solo refleja nuestro crecimiento como organización, sino que es un testimonio de la dedicación y la habilidad del joven fotoperiodista sirio, Mohamed Alrageb.

¿En qué medida se acepta un «retoque»?

Se permite alguna forma de edición en los envíos, pero debe mantenerse al mínimo y no afectar la autenticidad de la fotografía. Naturalmente, esto será decidido por los jueces cuando revisen los envíos.

¿Cómo se eligen los temas?

Esto se hace de manera similar a la selección de jueces. La Junta de Fideicomisarios de HIPA examinará una serie de temas sugeridos que se reducen a los temas finales de la temporada.

¿Cómo ve HIPA la profesión del fotógrafo en un mundo donde (debido a los teléfonos inteligentes) todos parecen ser fotógrafos?

Con la llegada de los teléfonos inteligentes, la fotografía se está convirtiendo rápidamente en una forma de arte de las masas. Esto es algo positivo que solo aumentará la conciencia en la forma de arte y permitirá que se tomen fotografías más bellas. No es la experiencia y / o los antecedentes del fotógrafo lo que más destacará en este tiempo, sino la calidad de sus fotografías y el aprecio que reciben del público en general.

¿Algún consejo para los jóvenes que quieren ser fotógrafos profesionales?

Nunca tengas miedo de probar algo loco y asegúrate de aprender sobre fotografía y trata de rodearte siempre con la forma de arte. Además, asegúrese de que siempre arriesguen y experimenten la fotografía en todos los niveles; ya sea como fotógrafo, estudiante o como observador de galerías fotográficas y exposiciones.

Based in Dubai, HIPA is one of the most important photography competitions in the world. Gather photographers from different countries who share their best shots. Portraits that reach the soul, stories, landscapes, realities and dreams. The profession of the photographer in times of constant technological challenges. We speak with His Excellency Ali bin Thalith, General Secretary of HIPA.

¿When and how is HIPA born?

HIPA was established in 2011 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai.

¿How jurors are selected?

Every year, a shortlist of juror is drawn up by HIPA’s board of Trustees, who then go on to select the final list of judges for the season.

¿His Highness Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has participation in the selection of the winning photos?

No, HIPA’s patron has nothing to do with the selection of winning photographs which is the full responsibility of the judging panel.

¿The contest privileges the technique over the more spontaneous photographs?

HIPA has no clear preference to the type of photographs selected, as long as they fall within the parameters and rules of the competition. In the end, it is the judges who rate the submissions as per their judgment and their understanding of HIPA’s themes and rules.

¿Some anecdote from previous contests?

In our recently completed seventh season, we were lucky to have a grand prize winner who not only captured a breath-taking image but also happened to be HIPA’s youngest ever winner. This not only reflects our growth as an organisation but is a testament to the dedication and skill of the young Syrian photojournalist, Mohamed Alrageb.

¿To what extent a «retouch» is accepted?

Some form of editing in submissions is permitted but this must be kept to a minimum and not affect the authenticity of the photograph. Naturally, this will be decided by the judges when reviewing submissions.

¿How the themes are chosen?

This is done in a similar fashion to the selection of judges. The HIPA Board of Trustees will go through a number of suggested themes that are narrowed down to the final themes of the season.

¿How HIPA see the profession of the photographer in a world where (because of smartphones) everyone seems to be a photographer?

With the advent of smartphones, photography is fast becoming an art form of the masses. This is a definite positive that will only increase awareness in the artform and allow for more beautiful photographs to be taken. It is not the experience and/or background of the photographer that speaks loudest for him/her in this day and age, but the quality of their photographs and appreciation they receive from the general public.

¿Any advice for boys and girls who want to be a professional photographer?

Never be scared to try something crazy and make sure that you learn about photography and try to always surround yourself with the art form. Also, make sure that you always take your chances and experience photography on all levels; be it as a photographer, student or as an observer of photographic galleries and exhibitions.
