Desconocido para el gran público pero una leyenda en el mundo del country, la película de Ethan Hawke pone el foco sobre el cantante Blaze Foley, interpretado por el actor y también músico Ben Dickey, ganador de un premio especial del jurado en el Festival de Cine de Sundance de este año.
Hawke, logra con naturalidad y sin los excesos en los que suelen caer las biopics contar la corta vida de un artista que durante su paso por la escena musical logro dejar una huella, sin necesidad de tener un éxito, de hecho cuando estaba por lograrlo lo encontró una muerte absurda.
Pese a estar contada por su novia Sibyl Rosen en el libro en que se basa la película «Living in The Woods in a Tree: Remembering Blaze Foley» (también es guionista junto a Hawke del film) la historia no resulta edulcorada, cada viñeta de la vida del cantante se siente real y con el suficiente peso narrativo como para involucrar al espectador.
En su esencia, Blaze es el tipo de historia trágica y romantica de un artista «problemático» que ya vimos muchas veces, pero a diferencia de otras a Blaze no se le nota el diseño ni la manipulación en la que esos films suelen ahogarse.
Foley conoce a Sybil Rosen (Alia Shawkat, la pecosa de Arrested Development) en una comunidad hippie y pasan unos meses juntos viviendo en una casa en el árbol en el medio del bosque. A partir de ese momento la atención en su carrera musical será un problema en el desarrollo de la relación.
Desde el principio de la película y hasta el final, se libra una batalla por el legado del cantante (y sobre quién llegó a conocerlo más profundamente) entre los dos mejores amigos de Blaze, el músico de culto Townes Van Zandt (interpretado con una facilidad alarmante por el actor/guitarrista Charlie Sexton) y el armoniquista Zee (interpretado por el amigo de Hawke, Josh Hamilton)
Hawke claramente ha aprendido mucho de Richard Linklater, quien aparece en la película junto a Steve Zahn y Sam Rockwell como tres petroleros que invierten dinero en la carrera de Foley.
En el Q&A al que Revista Meta pudo asistir (en el IFC Center de Greenwich Village en New York) Hawke, acompañado por Ben Dickey, la guionista Sybil Rosen y Charlie Sexton, contaron -entre otras cosas- como el presupuesto de marketing del film es básicamente ellos recorriendo el país haciendo notas para promocionarlo (lo opuesto al alto perfil de una película similar temáticamente y también dirigida por un actor, «Nace una estrella» de Bradley Cooper con Lady Gaga). Dickey dijo estar sorprendido por lo mucho que se compenetró en su personaje, la guionista por su parte remarcó que para ella revisitar la historia de quién fue su novio fue un proceso sanador y que no lo vivió como un drama sino como una celebración de una vida que merecía ser contada.
Como director Hawke está más interesado en mirar hacia adentro de su personaje explorando el sentimiento detrás de la creatividad y la autodestrucción y menos en los «cómo» o los «porqué», las devastadoras canciones country del protagonista y una fotografía hermosa y precisa hacen el resto.

Unknown to the general public but a legend in the country world, the film by Ethan Hawke puts the focus on the singer Blaze Foley, played by the actor and also musician Ben Dickey, winner of a special jury prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Hawke, manages naturally and without the excesses in which biopics tend to fall, to tell the short life of an artist who, during his time on the music scene, managed to make a mark, without having a «hit», in fact when he was about to achieve it. He found an absurd death.
Despite being told by her girlfriend Sibyl Rosen in the book on which the film is based «Living in The Woods in a Tree: Remembering Blaze Foley» (she is also a screenwriter with Hawke in the film), the story is not sweetened, each segment of the life of the singer feels real and with enough narrative weight to involve the audience.
In its essence, Blaze is the kind of tragic and romantic story of a «problematic» artist that we have seen many times before, but unlike others, Blaze does not shows the design or the manipulation in which those films usually drown.
Foley meets Sybil Rosen (Alia Shawkat, the freckled girl of Arrested Development) in a hippie community and they spend a few months together living in a tree house in the middle of the woods.From that moment the attention in his musical career will be a problem in the development of the relationship.
From the beginning of the film and until the end, a battle is waged for the singer’s legacy (and who came to know him more deeply) between the two best friends of Blaze, the cult musician Townes Van Zandt (played with ease by the actor / guitarist Charlie Sexton) and the harmonica player Zee (played by Hawke’s friend, Josh Hamilton)
Hawke has clearly learned a lot from Richard Linklater, who appears in the film with Steve Zahn and Sam Rockwell as three oilmen who invest money in Foley’s career.
In the Q&A Revista Meta could attend (at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village in New York) Hawke, accompanied by Ben Dickey, screenwriter Sybil Rosen and Charlie Sexton, told -among other things- how the film’s marketing budget is basically they touring the country doing interviews to promote it (the opposite of the high profile of a thematically similar film and also directed by an actor, «A star is born» by Bradley Cooper with Lady Gaga). Dickey said he was surprised by how much he got involved in his character, the scriptwriter remarked that for her revisit the story of who was her boyfriend was a healing process and did not live it as a drama but as a celebration of a life that deserved to be told.
As a director Hawke is more interested in looking inside his character exploring the feeling behind creativity and self-destruction and less in the «how´s» or «why´s», the devastating country songs of the protagonist and a beautiful and accurate photography do the rest.
