Review: THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG

En Broadway brilla una obra en donde todo lo que sale mal, es realmente perfecto. Una pieza donde la parodia sobre el misterio de un asesinato queda teatralizado de la mejor manera.

La historia: una compañía teatral se enfrenta al estreno de una obra y por supuesto las cosas no salen bien, no están preparados, pero ellos harán lo imposible para seguir adelante. Pese a que todo falla: la luz, la escenografía, los actores heridos, y hasta un principio de incendio, sumado a otras sorpresas. Porque pueden pasar las cosas más increíbles, pero ellos no van a detenerse, van a finalizar la obra sea como sea. Así es el trabajo del actor, llevando a la realidad la frase: el show siempre debe continuar.

Comienza la escena con un cadáver, que, por supuesto no se quedará quieto. Los sospechosos son todos: La prometida del fallecido, Amelia Mcclain, con la cuota justa de dramatismo y glamour. El hermano, el viejo retenedor, y el mejor amigo, todos son personajes bien definidos, como si fuera el clásico juego de mesa, Clue. Una historia digna de Agatha Christie. Es el tropo del «quien lo hizo» llevado al paroxismo de la comedia física.

La escenografía impacta, todo está pensado para que salga tan mal que asombre lo bien que eso queda.

Ocho actores en escena que tienen cientos de momentos para lucirse, porque no se detienen ni un segundo. Una adrenalina imparable, demostrando una destreza física que impacta y emociona. Se nota el trabajo previo, están bien entrenados para sortear todo tipo de situaciones que hasta pueden ser «peligrosas».

Desde el comienzo, cuando el público entra al teatro, ya están los actores merodeando por los pasillos preguntando si «vieron un perro». Las divertidas intervenciones de Akron Watson que interpreta al encargado del sonido de la puesta, luce más preocupado por su colección perdida de cd’s de Duran Duran que por la obra en sí. 

Todas las actuaciones son destacables, pero Clifton Duncan muestra una destreza corporal y agilidad que es un placer de ver. Por otro lado, Alex Mandell, con una espontaneidad logra constante complicidad con el público, que termina adorándolo. También el detective Mark Evans, nos introduce de la mejor manera a la historia  y el mayordomo Harrison Unger, en su debut en Broadway, con sus maravillosos olvidos se roba las miradas, logrando que el espectador quiera más.

Las carcajadas no cesan, cada gag está bien elegido logrando lo que el público quiere ver y oír.

Lo que los personajes viven es un verdadero drama, el sudor recorre los rostros de desesperación, pero la historia que cuentan nunca se detiene. Pese a todos los errores, todo se entiende y eso es una decisión inteligente por parte de los guionistas.

The Play That Goes Wrong se lleva todos los aplausos, en especial para la excelente dirección de Mark Bell y la escenografía, pero la ovación final es para todo los actores que con su virtuosismo, pasión, precisión, espontaneidad, y por sobre todo, la naturalidad con la que se manejan en escena, y hasta fuera de escena. No es fácil competir en la cartelera neoyorquina, pero ellos están preparados. Y hacer reír siempre es más difícil que hacer llorar.

Si pasan por New York no duden en ver esta obra. Lo que sale mal es aquello que hace que la obra sea un verdadero éxito.

*La obra promete la presencia de Leonardo DiCaprio, sólo que no pudo estar presente en la función que nosotros presenciamos… ni en ninguna otra. Debe haber sido un error.

On Broadway shines a play where everything that goes wrong, is really right. A play where the parody on the mystery of a murder is dramatized in the best way possible.

The story: a theater company faces the premiere of a play and, of course, things do not go well, they are not prepared, but they will do the impossible to move forward. Although everything fails: the light, the scenery, the injured actors, and even a small fire. Because the most incredible things can happen, but they will not stop, they will finish the work no matter what. This is the work of the actor, bringing the famous quote to reality: the show must go on.

The play begins with a corpse, which, of course, will not sit still. The suspects are all: The betrothed of the deceased, Amelia Mcclain, with the fair share of drama and glamour. The brother, the old retainer, and the best friend, all with well-defined characters, as if it were the classic board game, Clue. A story worthy of Agatha Christie. It is the trope of the «whodunit» taken to the paroxysm of physical comedy.

The scenery impacts, everything is designed to go so bad that amaze how well that is. Eight actors on stage who have hundreds of moments to show off, because they do not stop for a second. An unstoppable adrenaline, demonstrating a physical skill that excites the audience. You can see the rehersals, they are well trained to avoid all kinds of situations that can even be physically «dangerous».

From the start, when the audience enters the theater, the actors are already prowling the halls asking if they «saw a dog». The funny interventions of Akron Watson that interprets the person in charge of the sound of the play, looks more worried about his lost CD collection of Duran Duran than the play itself.

All the performances are remarkable, but Clifton Duncan shows a corporal dexterity and agility that is a pleasure to watch. On the other hand, Alex Mandell, with a spontaneity, achieves constant complicity with the audience, which ends up loving him. Also the detective Mark Evans, introduces us the best way to history and the butler Harrison Unger, in his debut on Broadway, is hilarious with its wonderful forgetfulness, making the audience want for more.

The laughter does not stop, each gag is well chosen achieving what the public wants to see and hear. What the characters live is a true drama, the sweat runs through the faces of despair, and the story they tell also never stops. Despite all the fake mistakes, everything in the story works. A brilliant decision of the script.

The Play That Goes Wrong gets all the accolades, especially for the excellent direction of Mark Bell and the set design, but the final ovation is for all the actors who with their virtuosity, passion, precision, and the spontaneity, in and even out of scene. It is not easy to compete in Broadway, but they are prepared. And making people laugh is always harder than making them cry.

If you are in New York do not hesitate to see this play. What goes wrong is what makes the play a real success.

The Play That Goes Wrong escrita por Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer y Henry Shields, se estrenó en Londres en 2012 en un pequeño teatro, más tarde pasó al circuito off, y en el 2014 saltó al teatro comercial del West End, allí tuvo un gran éxito de público y críticas, ganando el Laurence Olivier Award a la Mejor Nueva Comedia.

Llegó a New York al Lyceum Theatre y ya cumplieron 300 funciones a sala llena. De los productores de Avenue Q y Something Rotten y el reconocido productor J.J.Abrams.
