Hablamos con Justin Fair director de uno de los cortometrajes más creativos de Tribeca Film Festival 2020.

¿Cómo surgió la idea del cortometraje?
Ian Grody lo pensó. Escribió algunas de las cartas para una publicación hace algunos años y luego las amplió a varias más para una noche de lecturas escenificadas en NYU, que es donde nos encontramos. Inmediatamente quise hacer una versión cinematográfica, y finalmente la adaptó y aceptó dejarme dirigirlo.
¿De actor a director? ¿Cómo fue la transición?
Creo que la transición de actor a director es natural. Algunos de los mejores directores fueron actores: Ron Howard, Clint Eastwood, John Cassavetes, Charlie Chaplin … Crecí actuando en escenarios de cine y eventualmente me formé en NYU con The Atlantic Theatre Company y con David Mamet. Como actor, puedes aprender de otros directores de cerca en sus sets y estás en el extremo receptor de sus instrucciones. Los no actores / directores no suelen tener la oportunidad. Tener una base sólida de actuación es invaluable cuando se habla con los actores y también puede informar cómo organizar el set y el día del rodaje para considerar las actuaciones. Cada director debe actuar o tomar una clase de actuación.
A pesar de ser narrado, en SLOAN HEARTS NECKFACE, las imágenes cuentan la historia perfectamente y de una manera realmente creativa…
¡Eso es muy amable, gracias! El proceso para esta película fue muy singular porque había muchas partes móviles interdependientes y quería que cada elemento pudiera informar a los demás tanto como sea posible. Entonces, por ejemplo, las presentaciones de voz en off podrían informar la duración de las escenas y la obra de arte y los efectos visuales podrían informar cómo filmaríamos algo. También anulamos la imagen de bloqueo mientras se grababa la película para que la música pudiera informar el ritmo y la edición en algunos casos. Esto requirió mucha planificación y guión gráfico y mucha ayuda de algunos colaboradores increíbles.

Estoy emocionado de estrenar Sloan Hearts Neckface en Tribeca 2020. Estaba yendo a la universidad en Maryland cuando ocurrieron los ataques el 11 de septiembre y la semana siguiente estaba en Manhattan en un festival de cine con una película en la que había actuado, ‘Coming Home ‘. El siguiente septiembre me trasladé a NYU y viví en el centro durante un año antes de mudarme a Village. Así que pude experimentar un poco de las consecuencias de lo que los ataques hicieron a esta ciudad y la reconstrucción. Además de ser uno de los mejores festivales del mundo, ser parte del festival creado para ayudar a revitalizar a Tribeca después de los ataques me hace sentir muy orgulloso. Especialmente con esta película, que es, en cierto modo, una carta de amor al centro. Y ahora, en estos tiempos increíblemente desafiantes e inciertos, cuando los festivales de cine en todas partes tienen que cancelar, todos en Tribeca continúan perseverando y trabajando incansablemente para encontrar nuevas formas de apoyar a los cineastas y sacar las películas. Nunca se rinden. No puedo decir suficientes cosas buenas sobre ellos.

¡Si! Nueva York es así. Pero hay que tener cuidado, porque a veces es una película de terror. Tampoco intentes filmar en el metro de Nueva York a menos que Peter Fackler sea tu DP.
¿Alguna anécdota durante el rodaje? ¿Algo que te llamó la atención?
Filmar bien en Nueva York es como intentar hacer una clase de yoga en un avión en asientos económicos. Siempre estás abarrotado en estos pequeños espacios y nunca tienes suficiente espacio o estás tratando con el público o ambos. Esto es especialmente cierto cuando se filma con un presupuesto limitado como nosotros. El primer día de filmación, nos trasladamos a mi apartamento de Brooklyn con Isiah y Raúl. Nuestro horario era bastante ambicioso con una gran mudanza de la compañía de Brooklyn a Harlem a mitad del día. Se suponía que Isiah tenía dificultades para llegar a una cena y tuvimos que pedirle que la dejara para más tarde. También había mucha gente en Harlem y estábamos filmando afuera, así que tan pronto como llegamos allí, comencé a escuchar mucho «Shhheeeeeeet» (mierda) en las calles. Pero fue más que amable con nosotros, a pesar de que las condiciones eran difíciles y se retrasó su cena. Más tarde descubrimos que era su cena de cumpleaños … era su cumpleaños. Así que básicamente no recibió nada en su cumpleaños y mantuvo el mejor estado de ánimo en contra de todos estos desafíos y fue simplemente el mejor tipo, sin mencionar que ofreció una actuación bellamente matizada e inspirada. Isiah es un actor y profesional consumado. El hombre es asombroso. No recibe suficiente crédito. Excepto tal vez en Harlem.

Aunque prefiero que se vea en un teatro con una audiencia, es emocionante pensar que podría haber vida on line para que todos tengan acceso!

How did the idea for the short film come about?
Ian Grody thought it up. He wrote a few of the letters for a publication some years ago and then later expanded them to several more for an evening of staged readings at NYU- which is where we met. I immediately wanted to make a film version, and he eventually adapted it and agreed to let me direct.
From actor to director? How was the transition?
I think the transition from actor to director is a natural one. Some of the greatest directors were actors- Ron Howard, Clint Eastwood, John Cassavetes, Charlie Chaplin… I grew up acting on film sets and eventually trained at NYU with The Atlantic Theater Company and with David Mamet. As an actor, you get to learn from other directors up close on their sets and you’re on the receiving end of their directions. Non-actor/directors don’t often get the opportunity. Having a strong acting foundation is invaluable when speaking with the actors and can also inform how you organize the set and the shooting day to consider the performances. Every director should act or take an acting class.
Despite being narrated in SLOAN HEARTS NECKFACE, the images tell the story perfectly, and in a really creative way.
That’s very kind, thank you! The process for this film was very unique because there were so many interdependent moving parts and I wanted each element to be able to inform the others as much as possible. So for example the voice-over performances could inform the length of scenes and the artwork and visual effects could inform how we’d shoot something. We voided locking picture while the film was being scored too so the music could inform the rhythm and editing in some instances. This took a lot of planning and storyboarding and a lot of help from some amazing collaborators.
A pride to be part of the Tribeca Film Festival…
I’m thrilled to premier Sloan Hearts Neckface at Tribeca 2020. I was going to college in Maryland when the attacks on September 11th occurred and the following week I was in Manhattan at a film festival with a film I had acted in, ‘Coming Home’. The next September I transferred to NYU and lived downtown for a year before moving to the Village. So I got to experience a a bit of the aftermath of what the attacks did to this city and the rebuilding. Besides being one of the best festivals in the world, to be a part of the festival that was created to help revitalize Tribeca after the attacks makes me very proud. Especially with this film, that is, in a way, a love letter to downtown. And then now, in these incredibly challenging and uncertain times, when film fests everywhere are having to cancel, everyone at Tribeca continues to persevere and work tirelessly to find new ways to support the filmmakers and get the films out there. They never give up. I can’t say enough good things about them.
In the New York subways, we can always find this kind of stories?
Yes! New York is like that. But you have to watch out, because sometimes it’s a horror movie. Also never try to shoot in the NY Subway unless Peter Fackler is your DP.
Any anecdote while filming? Something that caught your attention?
Well shooting in New York is kind of like trying to do a yoga class on an airplane in economy seating. You’re always crammed in these small hot spaces and never have enough room or you’re dealing with the public or both. This is especially true when shooting on a limited budget like we were. The first day of filming, we were smooshed into my crappy Brooklyn apartment with Isiah and Raul. Our schedule was pretty ambitious with a huge company move from Brooklyn to Harlem in the middle of the day. Isiah was supposed to have a hard out time to get to a dinner and we had to ask him to push later and delay his dinner. He is also very popular in Harlem and we were shooting outside, so as soon as we got there, you started hearing a lot of «Shhheeeeeeet» on the streets. The whole time, he was nothing but gracious to us and to his fans, even though the conditions were challenging and he was delayed to his dinner. We later discovered it was his birthday dinner… on his birthday. So he came in for basically nothing on his birthday in the greatest mood and against all of these challenges and was just the greatest guy, not to mention delivering a beautifully nuanced and inspired performance. Isiah’s the consummate actor and professional. The man’s amazing. He doesn’t get enough credit. Except maybe in Harlem.

What other projects do you have?
I’m working on a couple feature scripts I’m excited about, but looking forward to see what the next adventure will be. Everything is up in the air.
After Tribeca, what other tours will SLOAN HEARTS NECKFACE have?
Times are super uncertain right now, but we’re working on how and when it will have a physical premier with Tribeca and then whether the other fests will start back up or if we’ll go on-line with it earlier than we had originally planned. Though I’d prefer it be seen in a theater with an audience, it’s exciting to think there could be life for it online where everyone would have access!
