Conozcan al colectivo de Switch n’ Play, un grupo de artistas queer establecidos en Brooklyn donde le brindan desde 2006 un lugar para la experimentación y una plataforma para expresar su arte. Retratados con amor por le directore Cody Stickles en este documental, uno a uno vamos conociendo a cada uno de ellos, desde sus propios testimonios y viendo sus performances.
Y vaya performances! «A Night at Switch n’ Play», muestra una noche típica en el Branded Saloon en pleno Prospect Heights. Fuera de la idea mainstream que puede tenerse del mundo drag, aquí la provocación y el arte están por encima de cualquier búsqueda cool, hipster o fashion.
En el pequeño escenario se desata una mezcla de burlesque, humor y total desprejuicio moralista. Conducida por la hermosa Miss Malice, el grupo deconstruye clichés y borra los limites de lo masculino y femenino, si bien el publico presente parece estar en sintonia con los performers cabe preguntarse lo que puede pensar una audiencia más conservadora al ver el show.
Uno de los personajes más interesantes del documental (y del show) es Divina GranSparkle, quien toma prestado del icono Divine, no solo el nombre, también el shock (pedazo de carne mediante), mientras que Nyx Nocturne trae extrañeza, horror y sensualidad, Zoe Ziegfeld -parte regular del espectaculo- rompe paradigmas, mientras luce un impresionante tatuaje de una serpiente que envuelve las curvas de su cuerpo, Pearl Harbor hace alarde de su elegancia y King K. James muestra su masculinidad desde un costado muy interesante, Vigor Mortis por su parte parece más interesado en explotar un humor más retorcido en su performance.
Sin asumir riesgos narrativos Stickels se limita a mostrar a sus retratados como quieren ser mostrados, vulnerables y reales. Trans, no binarios y femme performers haciendo drag y burlesque, en definitiva personas que cambian los roles de género poniendo en primer plano lo que importa: la humanidad que nos recuerda que la atracción no tiene sexo. Entretenido y libre de ataduras el documental replica el mismo sentimiento que transmite el colectivo de artistas y el lugar donde actúan. A Night at Switch n ’Play, dirigida por Cody Stickels, se estrenó recientemente en el Festival de Cine Inside Out de Toronto. y el próximo 26 de octubre de 2019 lo hará en el Newfest New York LGBT Film Festival.
- La manera correcta de nombrar el arte de estos performers sería: intérpretes trans, no binarios y femme haciendo drag y burlesque.
¿Sabía usted? El origen del término «drag» viene de la época de Shakespeare, en aquellos tiempos los actores eran todos hombres porque se consideraba inapropiado que las mujeres participaran en espectáculos públicos. Cuando los hombres tenían que usar las faldas largas de los personajes femeninos, se arrastraban (drag en inglés).

Meet the Switch n ’Play collective, a group of queer artists established in Brooklyn where they have provided a place for experimentation since 2006 and a platform to express their art. Portrayed with love by the director Cody Stickels in this documentary, one by one we get to know each of them, from their own testimonies and watching their performances.
And what performances! “A Night at Switch n’ Play ”shows a typical night at the Branded Saloon in Prospect Heights. Outside the mainstream idea that can be had of the drag world, here provocation and art are above any cool, hipster or fashion quest.
In the small stage a mixture of burlesque, humor and total lack of prejudice is unleashed. Conducted by the beautiful Miss Malice, the group deconstructs clichés and erases the limits of the masculine and feminine, although the public present seems to be in tune with the performers, one may wonder what a more conservative audience can think when watching the show.
One of the most interesting characters in the documentary (and the show) is Divina GranSparkle, who borrows from the iconic Divine , not only the name, but also the shock (piece of meat included), while Nyx Nocturne brings strangeness, horror and sensuality, Zoe Ziegfeld -regular part of the show- breaks paradigms, while wearing an impressive snake tattoo that wraps around the curves of her body, Pearl Harbor flaunts her elegance and King K. James shows his masculinity from a very interesting side, Vigor Mortis for his part seems more interested in exploiting a more twisted humor in their performance.
Without taking risks in the narrative Stickles simply shows his characters how they want to be shown, vulnerable and real. Trans, non-binary and femme performers performing drag & burlesque, ultimately people who change gender roles, bringing to the fore what matters: humanity that reminds us that attraction has no sex. Entertaining and free of ties, the documentary replicates the same feeling that the collective of artists exudes and the place where they perform. A Night at Switch n ’Play, directed by Cody Stickels, premiered at the Toronto Inside Out Film Festival. and on October 26, 2019 in the Newfest New York LGBT Film Festival.
The correct way to name the art of these performers would be: trans interpreters, not binaries and femme doing drag and burlesque.
Did you know? The origin of the term «drag» comes from the time of Shakespeare, at that time the actors were all men because it was considered inappropriate for women to participate in public shows. When men had to wear the long skirts of the female characters, which dragged on the floor, they referred to it is as playing drag.
